The Goo Goo Dolls - Slide
Could you whisper in my ear
The things you wanna feel
I'll give you anything
To feel it comin'
Do you wake up on your own
And wonder where you are
You live with all your faults
[Chorus:]
I wanna wake up where you are
I won't say anything at all
So why don't you slide
Yeah we're gonna let it, slide
Don't you love the life you killed
The priest is on the phone
Your father hit the wall
Your ma disowned you
Don't suppose I'll ever know
What it means to be a man
Something I can't change
I'll live around it
[Chorus]
And I'll do anything you ever
Dreamed to be complete
Little pieces of the nothing that fall
May, put your arms around me
What you feel is what you are
And what you are is beautiful
May, do you wanna get married
Or run away
And I'll do anything you ever
Dreamed to be complete
Little pieces of the nothing that fall
May, put your arms around me
What you feel is what you are
And what you are is beautiful
May, do you wanna get married
Or run away
[Chorus]
This song makes me think of David :) Well, actually it just catches my attention with the line:
"I wanna wake up where you are."
Anyways, the meaning of this song is under a lot of speculation from GGD fans, so I'll just explain it in my own words.
The overall meaning of the song is that unless we let things slide, like our faults and our past, there's no way we can continue moving forward in life.
It's sung by a boy, to a girl, obviously. The girl has had a hard time in life, she's made mistakes. "Don't you love the life you killed" can refer either to her messing up her own life, or could be referring to her having an abortion. Her parents have no faith in her, and blame her completely for her mistakes - her mom left her and her dad went crazy. The singer mentions that she wakes up, not knowing where she is - which is because she can't let things go. He, however, lives with his faults: "I'll live around it."
The repeated verses:
I wanna wake up where you are,
I won't say anything at all
So why don't you slide
And I'll do anything you ever
Dreamed to be complete
Little pieces of the nothing that fall
May, put your arms around me
What you feel is what you are
And what you are is beautiful
May, do you wanna get married
Or run away
These verses deal with the more personal aspect in the song, which is, of course, him confessing his love to her. Despite her problems, he loves her. Unlike those who judge her, he won't say anything. He says that the fact she feels guilty about her life shows she is a good person, and because your feelings and personality are a reflection of how you are portrayed outwardly, she is a beautiful person despite her problems. He isn't held back by her past, or her mistakes - to him, they do not change who she is. He just wants to be with her and support her no matter what she wants to do - whether it be getting married or running away.
The line I think is most important, and most overlooked, is:
"I wanna wake up where you are."
I don't think it only means he wants to wake up beside her. Although he means it physically, he also wishes he could wake up in her shoes so he can perceive her world as she does, so he can understand her. But because he can't, the next best thing he can do is accept her no matter what.
It reminds me of my baby because he tells me a million times a day that I am an angel, that things I've done or that have happened to me before don't matter at all. And of course, he always says he wants to wake up beside me :)
So this is dedicated to David. I love you honey <3
